Course outline


INTRODUCTION

This course is designed to give students an introduction into the world of Digital art.  We will focus on the Basic principles of art and Modern art styles of painting, Painting and drawing with raster graphic software, Drawing with Vector graphic software,  and Page Layout and design.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to be progressive in the skills and technical knowledge demanded of the students. It is a project based course and skills are learned while students are working on projects. As students progress through the course, the skills from the previous projects are built upon.

EVALUATION

Students are evaluated on each project through a marking rubric. Students are made aware of the rubric at the start of each assignment and the expectations required to achieve each level of success.  Projects are weighted based on weeks assigned and comprise 100% of the final grade. There is no final exam, and the final and mid-term mark is based upon work completed during class.

TOPICS AND PROJECTS

INTRODUCTION TO ART BASICS

  • Students learn the fundamentals of the principles of art.

  • Students start with computer drawing.

INTRODUCTION TO RASTER IMAGES:

  • Students learn the fundamentals of Raster graphic art using  Adobe Photoshop.

  • Students complete a Painting/drawing portfolio.

INTRODUCTION TO VECTOR  IMAGES:

  • Students learn the fundamentals of Vector graphic art using  Adobe Illustrator.

  • Students complete an illustration portfolio.

INTRODUCTION TO 2D ANIMATION

  • Students learn the fundamentals of Animating drawings using photoshop animating techniques.

  • Students create a character to animate.

INTRODUCTION TO PAGE LAYOUT

  • Students learn the fundamentals of graphic design and page layout,  using Adobe Indesign.

  • Students complete a portfolio showcasing their work

All art and portfolios are showcased to the class, and the best work may be presented to the school and community.

MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT & RESOURCES

Students using school equipment assume responsibility for loss or damage and may only use the equipment for approved school projects.  The course fee is used to purchase consumable items and resources and to maintain equipment in the Media Arts Studio. Everyone must respect the facilities and equipment in the Media Arts Studio.

  • Students will have shared access to some of the AV equipment, computers and accessories in the lab.

  • Students will use  google drive to back up and transfer data.  A memory card (8G )may be used.

  • Students are expected to use the classroom computers and professional software for their projects.

  • Classroom computers have the professional graphic and video software required for this course.  Students who wish to have professional software on their devices can take advantage of educational pricing through Apple or Adobe.

  • Use of personally owned devices in the multimedia lab is not encouraged, but may be a option in some cases, if a student has access to the Adobe suite, and will be discussed on an individual basis.

There is a reasonable amount of wear and tear that is expected on equipment with regular and responsible use. The cost of repair and upkeep is not the responsibility of the student who is using the equipment appropriately.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

This class emphasizes project management, therefore students are expected to plan projects carefully in order to meet all deadlines.  Students who find they may not be able to meet deadlines will be required to spend time in the media lab outside of class time, at lunch or focus..  Any exceptional situations should be discussed with Mrs Gaudio.
