Course Rational

This is an Inquiry and project based course in Experimental Psychology and Applied Sociology.  Students will be introduced to various topics related to testing and the experimental aspects of each discipline and will review well known experiments, and scientific research methods, including experimental design and introductory statistical analysis.   Formative assessment may take the form of weekly open book quizzes, journal entries, or in class presentations.  Students will be given the opportunity to plan, design, complete a combined psychological / sociological experiment of their own, which will be presented to the class.

Students will receive 6 credits in total, 3 in Psychology and 3 in Sociology.  Each course may be taught separately, concurrently or paired with Psy 20

 

Materials and Expectations

Students are expected to use a computer for research and presentation of projects. They will be expected to be Independent, creative and co-operative leaners. It is also essential that students become proficient with various technology and software available and supported at school, such as presentation software like keynote, iMovie, the Adobe Creative suite and Word or Pages.  The class will have some opportunity to use the media lab this year, and will have access to the software and assistance, when equipment is available. Students are expected to adhere to the media class guidelines for classroom and equipment use.  There is no textbook for this class.  A final experimental project will replace a final exam.

 

 

Activities and Assignments

there may be one or more of the following types of activities:

  • A: Quiz type assignment: You may refer to your notes, and lessons to complete these
  • B: Topic Projects:  create a variety of short visual presentations to share in class
  • C: Journal Responses:  your personal responses to specific topics, articles or ideas.
  • D: Assignments: Other paper or in class activities.

 

Final Experiment project.   this consists of two submitted pieces:

Experiment report

    • Plan and design a psychological experiment on a topic of your choice.
    • Final report-Include your hypothesis, design plan, data and data analysis

Presentation

    • Present your findings in a powerpoint, website or video
    • Present your findings to the class
    • Use photos, images, video footage,  Get creative!
    • Your presentation will be uploaded ( or linked ) to your google Drive and shared with your teacher.  They will also be included on our you tube playlist.
